SPRING
Spring in the Western U.P. ushers in new life. New buds appear, and the black bear awaken from their slumber. The thunderous roar of waterfalls is a sensual pleasure and a photographer’s ultimate dream for the perfect picture. The ice melts off the shores of Lake Superior, leaving behind a treasure of rocks and gnarled driftwood awaiting your discovery. The cycle of life once again begins.
Waterfalls
If you enjoy spending your days viewing the rushing water and the trickling springs, you have come to the right place. The waterfalls range from 20 feet of rushing thunder to small glistening trickles. The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park alone is home to over 90 waterfalls.
Don’t miss Presque Isle! Located 0.9 miles south of M-107 on M-64 South, you will find Bonanza Falls. An often overlooked area shows the beauty of the Big Iron River as it flows toward Lake Superior. Travel south on M-64 to Bergland, head east toward Bruce Crossing, and you can see Cascade Falls by taking USFS 222 (which becomes 400) northeast from M-28. Park in the lot and walk about 1 mile. As you head west on M-28 to US-2 through Bessemer, you can view the Black River Harbor Falls. Just follow the signs!
If you choose to go east on M-28 from Bergland, 6.5 miles east of Bruce Crossing you will find Agate Falls. In Bruce Crossing take US-45 south to Bond Falls in Paulding. This 20-foot waterfall is worth the trip! Head back north on US-45 and just 7.5 miles north of Bruce Crossing, park at the North Country Hiking Trail and hike about 1 mile to the O Kun-de-kun Falls. Then continue north on US-45 to Rockland and visit the Victoria Dam. If you are headed towards Watersmeet, be sure to look for the Ajibikoka Falls, Meximine Falls, and Rock Bluff Falls.
